Bill Griffin

One of the world’s most respected cleaning industry educators, Seattle-based Bill Griffin established Cleaning Consultant Services in 1973, initially to market his 300-page ‘Comprehensive Custodial Training Manual’. Since that time he has written numerous cleaning-related books while also publishing the Cleaning Business Magazine for self-employed professional cleaners.

Today, Bill is kept extremely busy conducting cleaning seminars for various industry bodies and suppliers. He also provides consulting services to the US property management sector on various building maintenance issues, including cleaning and hygiene.


Griffin is one of only nine official Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS) assessors as well as being a member of the International Custodial Advisors Network (ICAN). He is a regular participant in the ISSA/Interclean North America education and events program and spoke at the 2010 seminar.

Acknowledged for his wide knowledge of both technical and management aspects of the cleaning industry, Bill is also a great presenter and an entertaining speaker.

From the Diploma level course, Manage people performance (BSBMGT502B) has been designed to assist Managers and Supervisors to develop their knowledge and skills in order to maximise people performance and drive business objectives. This workshop provides a ‘taster’, covering one of 10 sessions from the Diploma of Management for Women in the Cleaning Industry. Managing people performance is a valuable tool when conducted effectively, allowing us to resolve issues before they become problems and creating a supportive and encouraging culture in the workplace. Giving workers feedback and the opportunity to improve to meet expectations leads to a more productive workforce and better staff retention. You will receive practical tips and advice how to effectively manage and appraise your workers. Importantly you will also develop your skills in how to address non performances effectively. This is often cited as a ‘most hated management task’ and we will assist you to use this exercise as a positive experience. Managers will learn about the skill of motivating and encouraging employees to better performance and productivity tomaximise staff retention rates.

Comply with infection control policies and procedures (HLTIN301B) is aimed at Managers and Cleaners as an introduction to specialised cleaning and restoration of a high risk site or trauma scene where there is exposure to human bodily fluids. The course is based on the nationally recognised unit ‘Comply with infection control policies and procedures’ and assists employers to meet their duty of care by minimising the risk of infection resulting from work related exposure to HIV and other blood borne pathogens. Practical guidance is provided on the identification, assessment and control of OHS risks associated with potential exposure to blood or body fluids during a cleanup operation. Attendees will receive a Certificate of Completion and may also apply to Lennox to complete a project and assessment to receive a Statement of Attainment for this nationally recognised unit of competency.

As science progresses we are finding new ways to shape the definition of cleaning, not just in “green” and not just in “clean”. Some new scientific approaches have implications into how building cleaning contracts will be drafted. These new ways of cleaning measurement improve the practical supervision of cleaning contracts. The emphasis in cleaning will shift from cost alone, onto measureable cleaning performance. The opportunities for contract cleaners to genuinely ‘value add’ through intelligent use of these tools, will potentially change the paradigm in contract cleaning. This talk will outline the best of the new methods and the likely impacts over the next decade.

Applying the CHAT (Chemicals Heat Agitation Time) principles to hard floor cleaning, Mr Frei will give an overview of the function of chemical cleaners in the floor cleaning process and the basis of their selection. A brand-new eco-label for industrial & institutional (I&I) cleaning products will soon be seen on products in the Australian marketplace. The voluntary accreditation scheme has been developed by the industry body Accord Australasia and is designed in two parts: a rigorous set of criteria defining the characteristics of environmentally preferable I&I cleaning products; and an independent third-party scientific assessment to determine whether products meet the criteria. Already described by the independent Panel of expert toxicologists who reviewed the scheme as a “sound and robust…science-based, targeted and pragmatic set of criteria”, coupled with a “sound and transparent” third-party scientific accreditation process, come to this presentation to learn more about this significant development and opportunity.

Through our close links with carpet mills, retailers and our approved carpet cleaner networks we are able to provide essential carpet care and product advice to consumers worldwide. The addition of the Registered Inspectors network in 2005 and improving our carpet testing facility this year means that we are able to provide a one stop solution to carpet care.
